Over in Pierpont neighborhood in Ventura, an XC40 owner called me about her smart key. Not dead, not lost. Just falling apart.
The rubber on the lock and unlock buttons had gone soft and mushy from years of pocket carry. The fob shell had a hairline crack along the back seam, and the emergency HU101 blade was stiff in the housing from never once being pulled out. She had already been to the dealer. They quoted her a full replacement fob, programmed and cut. Weeks of wait time for the part to come from Volvo, plus a second visit to get it programmed to the CEM.
I met her at her garage and opened the fob on the hood. The YGOHUF8423 board inside was clean. No corrosion on the battery contacts, no cracks on the PCB, transponder antenna loop intact. The electronics were fine. The shell was the problem.
I transferred the working board and chip into a fresh aftermarket shell, pressed in new button pads, and cut a replacement emergency blade using my Lishi HU101 to decode her original. Tested passive entry on both front doors, the tailgate button, and start. Everything responded right away.
She didn't need a new key. She needed a new shell and someone who would check before replacing the whole thing. Saved her a good chunk and about two weeks of waiting on the dealer.
