2022 Volvo Xc40 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Had a call from the Gonzales Road commercial area about a 2022 XC40 that wouldn't start. The dash kept flashing "Key not in vehicle" even with the fob right on the start button.
When I got there, the owner was holding two fobs, both with fresh CR2032 batteries from last week. Still nothing. She'd already called the Volvo dealer in Thousand Oaks who wanted the car towed there, plus whatever the repair would cost.
I checked the basics first. Battery voltage on both fobs: 3.1V, perfect. Next step was checking if the CEM was even trying to read them. Connected my Autel to the OBD port and pulled live data from the passive start module. The CEM showed zero key detection attempts.
That pointed to the antenna coil in the start button area. These XC40s have a known issue where the LF antenna connection gets loose at the harness plug behind the center console. Pulled the trim, found the connector barely hanging on. One firm click and the CEM immediately saw both keys.
Started right up. Took twenty minutes total, saved her the tow and whatever the dealer would have charged for the same connector push.
