I was out near Hobson Park in Oxnard when the call came in. A woman had parked near the Trader Joe's off Gonzales Road and her XC40 wouldn't acknowledge the fob. Not intermittently, not weakly. I connected my programming equipment to the diagnostic port, pulled up the XC40's security system, and ran the key pairing sequence. The fob the factory ID matched came back clean. A few minutes of testing: lock, unlock, the remaining two buttons, start, handles on both sides. Everything behaved.
She did not need a new key. She needed the right diagnosis and someone who showed up at her car instead of asking her to tow it somewhere. Saved her a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and she was back in the Trader Joe's parking lot living her life about 35 minutes after I arrived.
