I got a call from a guy staying there who'd come down from the Central Valley for a few days with his wife. Somewhere between Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon, his only fob stopped being recognized. Push-button start wouldn't respond. The car just sat there like it didn't know him anymore. He tried the backup blade on the door handle, got in, and then sat there because the push-button still wouldn't bring it to life.

When I got there, his fob battery wasn't the problem. The fob itself had stopped communicating. I pulled a blank that matches the factory fob for this vehicle, got it cut to his car right there in the van, and connected to the OBD port to enroll it into the central electronics module. The module has to see the new key and accept it, and the process has a sequence to it. You can't rush it. About 35 minutes total.
By the time his wife came back from the beach, the car was running. He used the backup blade to lock up the old dead fob for the drive home and kept the new one in his pocket.
He said the dealer quote alone was already more than he wanted to spend, before the tow even entered the picture. We didn't dwell on it. He had a working key and a few hours of vacation left.
