A guy in the Border Area of San Ysidro called me on a weeknight. His 2017 Cruze was sitting in the driveway and the car would not recognize his fob at all. He had already put a new battery in twice, from two different packs he had in a drawer, and it made no difference. He was convinced the fob was dead and figured he was looking at a tow to the dealer the next morning.
I asked him a few questions over the phone. Both doors were unresponsive to touch. The car would not let him start it. He had no backup key.
When I got there I opened the fob first. The second battery he had put in was seated slightly off-center and one contact had a small bend from the pry angle. I corrected that, cleaned the terminals, and tested. Still nothing, which told me the fob had lost its pairing entirely, probably from a prolonged power interruption while he was swapping cells.
I connected to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the GM smart key system. The process reads the security data from the body control module and walks through a full key registration from scratch. There is a timed security access window built into the procedure, so you wait it out. You cannot rush it. Once it cleared, I registered his fob, walked both door handles, tested every button, and confirmed the car started cleanly.
He had expected a tow bill on top of whatever the dealer was going to charge him the next day. Instead it was done in his driveway before midnight. That part always seems to catch people off guard, even though for most Cruze owners this is a completely mobile job.
