I got a call from a guy parked off a dirt lot near the edge of North Park, closer to the canyon trails. He had loaded up after a morning ride, gone to leave, and the FOBIK was just gone. Checked every pocket, every bag, every cup holder. Nothing. Said it must have come out somewhere on the trail.
He had already called another locksmith before me. That locksmith told him the ignition cylinder would need to be drilled and replaced, and the quote was somewhere north of five hundred dollars. He called me for a second opinion, which I always respect.
When I got there I read his door lock mechanically, wafer by wafer, without touching the internals or pulling the cylinder. That gave me the cut data I needed. I cut a new blade, built the FOBIK body around it, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the OBD port to enroll the new fob and wipe any ghost keys from the system. The car started. All five buttons worked. The fold-out blade matched the door and ignition like it came from the factory.
The original lock cylinder was exactly the way I found it. No drilling, no replacement, no drama. He saved a serious chunk compared to what the other guy was going to charge, and he did not have to tow it anywhere.
That is the job I like. The one where the first quote was wrong and I get to show up with the right answer.
