I was parked near the Santee Lakes Area on a different job when the call came in. Construction worker, staying at a motel off Mission Gorge Road, single key, and it had stopped working sometime that afternoon. Dealer told him to tow the car in and they could look at it the next day. He didn't have the time and didn't know the area at all.
I finished up and drove straight to him.
He met me in the motel parking lot. The fob wasn't responding to anything -- no lock, no unlock, no proximity detection when he walked up to the door handles. I opened the fob first, out of habit. The CR2032 was still reading voltage but it was borderline, so I swapped it. Still nothing. That told me the battery wasn't the whole story.
Connected through the OBD port, ran the pairing sequence, and got the fob talking to the vehicle's immobilizer again. Cut a backup key while I was at it, because a guy working two states from home with one key is one bad day from doing this all over again.
Walked him through locking and unlocking with both keys before I left. He had an early start the next morning. He made it.
The dealer quote never came up again after I handed him the keys.
