Not every Dodge owner lives near a dealer. A ranch hand on a horse property outside San Marcos had a 2011 Dodge Charger that needed a new key. The nearest Dodge dealer was over an hour each way. Towing the truck there and back would cost more than the key itself, and pulling a ranch truck off the property during a work week wasn't something the operation could handle.
He called the dealer anyway. They quoted $448 plus getting the truck there. He found me and asked if I cover his area. I told him I'd drive out.
I worked on the truck right at the ranch gate. His Ram uses a Fobik, which is that rectangular brick-shaped remote with the blade built into the housing. I used my VVDI2 to pull the PIN and clone the transponder chip from his worn original to a new fob so the truck accepted it without a full OBD reprogram. His Fobik, FCC ID IYZ-C01C, was a 5-button unit that I rebuilt into a new shell and tested at the property.
He had two working keys before I left. Total was $262. The dealer route would have been $448 plus two hours of driving or a long-distance tow. For rural customers, mobile service isn't a luxury. It's the only thing that makes sense.
