The call came from Winding Walk, out in Chula Vista. Guy on the line was matter-of-fact about it. He'd had one fob for the 2019 Charger since he bought it used. That fob finally gave out, or so he thought, because the car was showing a key warning on the dash and wouldn't start.
He'd already swapped the battery. Already tried the walk-away-and-come-back trick. He was parked in his driveway going nowhere.
When I got there I did the thing I always do first: hold the fob flat against the start button and try. The car fired up. So the fob was reading, just barely, which told me the issue wasn't the immobilizer enrollment. It was the fob hardware itself. The internal antenna contact had a hairline crack, probably from the housing taking a hit at some point. The fob was technically alive but the read range had dropped to almost nothing.
I had a compatible shell and the right cell in the van. We transferred the electronics carefully, seated the contact flat, and I tested range from across the driveway before I called it done. Full function came back. Then I ran a second new fob through the programming sequence so he'd have a spare this time.
He mentioned the dealer had told him he'd need to schedule a day-of appointment and buy two new fobs at counter price. He'd been putting it off because of the cost. Getting it handled in the driveway for a fraction of that, without moving the car, was the part that got him.
I always do the boring verification at the end: every button, the start sequence, the range check, the backup start position at the button. Because a fob that works on the hood of my van still has to work from a coat pocket in the rain.
