I got a call from a guy over in Rancho El Cajon, parked in his driveway, holding half a key. The blade had snapped off in the ignition cylinder of his 1997 Dodge Stratus. He had already tried a magnet and a pair of tweezers. The broken piece was in there just deep enough to be stubborn.

I decoded the cut from the cylinder itself so I did not need him to dig up any paperwork, cut a new key blade on the spot, tested it in the ignition and both door locks, and that was the whole job.
He seemed surprised it did not involve a laptop or a tow truck. For a 1997 mechanical key car, it should not.
