2006 Dodge Stratus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote key and why does it need programming?

Your 2006 Dodge Stratus uses a remote, which means it is a key that does two jobs. The blade starts the car mechanically, but there is a transponder chip inside the housing that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer. If that chip is not recognized, the engine either will not start or will start and immediately stall. The fob portion handles the four-button remote functions: lock, unlock, trunk release, and alarm.

Q: How long does the dealer process actually take for a Dodge key replacement?

Longer than it should. CDJR dealers frequently run two to three weeks out on appointments, and if the fob is not sitting on a shelf, parts ordering adds more days on top of that. Owners on forums have reported drop-off waits where the car sat for several days before anyone looked at it, then additional time waiting for parts. If your one remaining key fails during that window, you are also looking at a tow.

Q: My 2006 Stratus starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the key bad?

Start with the CR2032 battery. A weak cell is the most common reason the remote functions drop out while the transponder still reads fine at startup, because starting the car requires less signal output than consistently hitting the receiver from across a parking lot. Swap the battery, make sure the contacts inside the fob are clean and seated, and retest.

Q: Can I program a second remote myself at home?

Not on this vehicle. The 2006 Stratus does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the transponder side. The immobilizer enrollment requires a tool connected to the OBD port. The remote RF sync portion has a known sequence some owners have tried, but without the transponder being properly enrolled, the key will not start the car regardless. Bottom line: if you bought a fob online, you still need someone with programming equipment to finish the job.

2006 Dodge Stratus Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off Oceanside Boulevard near the Fire Mountain neighborhood on a Wednesday afternoon, finishing up notes from a morning job, when the call came in. A woman needed a replacement remote for her 2006 Dodge Stratus. She had one working key left and her second had been missing for months. She wanted a spare before the last one disappeared too.

She was home, car was in the driveway. That is exactly where I want to be working.

I pulled up with the fob blank, cut the key blade to her vehicle on the spot, and connected to the OBD port to program the transponder and sync the remote functions. The whole thing took under 35 minutes. Four buttons, locks, trunk release, all working. She tested it herself before I packed up.

She mentioned she had called the dealer first. They told her to bring the car in, quoted her a wait for parts, and the number they gave her was not small. The mobile visit cost her a fraction of that, and she never left her driveway.

Dodge Stratus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Dodge dealer to get a replacement key for a 2006 Stratus?▼

No. The 2006 Stratus predates the secured gateway systems found on newer vehicles, so a qualified mobile locksmith with professional-grade programming equipment can handle this completely. Dealers sometimes imply that only their shop can program these keys. That is not accurate for a vehicle this age. A locksmith with the right tools can write the transponder to your immobilizer and sync the remote, all at your location.
