2000 Dodge Stratus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: I lost my only key for my 2000 Stratus. Can old keys be deactivated so they can't be used if someone finds them?

On a 2000 Stratus, the key is purely mechanical. Whoever holds a key cut to your car can use it. There is no electronic registration to clear and no way to remotely deactivate a lost metal key. If a lost key is a security concern, the right move is rekeying the locks. That means replacing or repinning the lock cylinders so the old key cut no longer works and a new key does.

Q: Does my 2000 Dodge Stratus have a hidden emergency key or backup start method?

No. The 2000 Stratus uses a standard metal key for both the door locks and the ignition. There is no fob, no push-button start, and no hidden backup blade inside a remote. The key is the key. If you are locked out or missing it, the solution is getting a replacement key cut to the vehicle.

Q: My 2000 Stratus ignition feels loose and the key is getting harder to turn. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, but worn ignition cylinders are common on late-1990s and early-2000s Chrysler products of this era. The tumblers inside the cylinder wear down over time, especially if the key ring is heavy and putting constant side pressure on the cylinder while driving. Symptoms are a key that wobbles more than it used to, resistance when turning, or the key occasionally feeling like it won't come out cleanly.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made from the VIN if I have no key at all?

Yes, on a vehicle this age, key code lookup by VIN is a standard option. The key code for your 2000 Stratus is tied to the vehicle identification number through manufacturer records. A locksmith with access to the right key code database can pull that code and cut a working key without needing to decode a lock or have any existing key in hand.

2000 Dodge Stratus Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call out to Kearny Mesa on a weekday afternoon. Guy in the parking lot near one of the auto shops off Convoy Street, standing next to a 2000 Dodge Stratus. He had snapped his only key off in the door lock trying to force it when the lock felt stiff. Half the key was still sitting in the cylinder.

He had already tried fishing it out with a pocketknife. That never helps, and it had not helped him either.

I extracted the broken piece from the cylinder without pulling the whole lock. Once it was out, I had both halves of the original key, which gave me a clean read on the cut. Decoded it, cut a fresh replacement right there at the truck, and tested it in the door and the ignition before I packed anything up.

The whole job took less time than he had spent trying to pry out the broken piece himself. He mentioned the dealer had told him they would need the car brought in and could not give him a same-day window. That was the last thing I heard about the dealer, because we were already done.

Dodge Stratus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle a situation where I have no working key for my 2000 Dodge Stratus?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call a tow truck. On a 2000 Stratus, this is a mechanical key job. A locksmith can decode the lock cylinder or pull the key code tied to your VIN and cut a working key on site. No towing, no overnight wait, no dealer markup. The dealer route for an all-keys-lost situation typically means getting the car there first, then waiting for availability.
