A couple came out of a movie theater near Ocean View Hills on a Friday night and their 2011 Ford Edge just sat there. The fob did nothing. No lock chirp, no response from the door handles, nothing. They had no idea the key blade was tucked inside the fob, and they definitely didn't know there was a backup start method for when the battery dies completely. They assumed the car was stranded until Monday morning when a dealer opened.

I was already in Otay Mesa, 15 minutes out, with the right fob blank already stocked in the van. When I got there I popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was original to the car. Probably ten years in there. Replaced it, re-seated everything clean, and the remote range came right back.
But the fob still needed to be confirmed in the system after sitting dead that long, so I ran the programming sequence through my equipment to make sure the vehicle was seeing it correctly. First press of the start button after that, engine fired. They both just looked at each other.
They drove home that night. If they had waited for the dealer, they would have been looking at Monday at the earliest and a bill that made no sense for what the job actually was. When the right parts are already in the van, a 9pm Friday call is the same job as a 9am Tuesday.
