Down near Bay Marina, a guy called me from a gas station on the edge of the Marina District. He was passing through National City on a road trip and his smart key fob had stopped being recognized by the car. The door handles weren't waking up, the push-to-start wasn't seeing the fob, and he'd already done what everyone does first: fresh CR2032 from inside the station. Still nothing.
When I got there he had the fob apart on the trunk lid, convinced the battery contacts were bent. They weren't. The battery was fine, the contacts were fine. The problem was that the fob itself had lost its pairing to the vehicle security system, probably from a low-battery event that corrupted the enrollment. New battery, dead enrollment. That's a combination that looks like a hardware failure but isn't.
I connected my programmer to the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer, and re-enrolled his existing fob along with cutting a fresh blade as a backup since he was traveling without a spare. The whole thing took maybe 40 minutes. I tested every button, walked both doors, checked that the engine would crank and hold, and made sure the key-not-detected warning was gone from the cluster before I packed up.
He asked if the dealer could have done it faster. I told him the truth: a dealer could do the same job, but he'd be looking at a tow to wherever they could fit him in, possibly the next day. He was back on the road before the ice in his gas station drink had melted.
