It was about 6:50 in the morning when the call came in from a job site off Willow Road out in Eucalyptus Hills. A construction worker. Shift started at seven. His 2015 Edge had been sitting overnight and when he walked out to it, the push-button start did nothing. No crank, no chime, just the dash sitting there cold. He had one fob, no spare, and his foreman was already on site.
I keep the van prepped by six. I was pulling into the lot before 7:20.
He met me at the door handle looking like a man doing the math on how bad this morning was going to get. I told him to give me a few minutes before we called it anything serious.
The fob battery check came first. Both CR2025 cells. One of them read fine. The other was almost nothing. On a two-cell fob, that second cell still matters. The system draws from both, and a near-dead cell dragging on a good one can confuse the whole signal. I swapped both, seated them correctly, and the fob woke right up. But the vehicle still wasn't fully happy. It had already logged a communication fault between the fob and the immobilizer from however many failed attempts he'd made that morning.
I connected through the OBD port, cleared the fault, and re-confirmed the fob enrollment. That last step takes maybe four minutes once you're in the system. Total hands-on time was under 25 minutes.
He clocked in late but not embarrassingly late. Before I left, I handed him a second fob I had programmed as a spare and told him to put it somewhere other than the same keyring. He looked at it for a second like that was advice he should have gotten years ago.
He didn't need a tow. He didn't need a dealer appointment. He needed someone who could be in Eucalyptus Hills before seven-thirty on a Tuesday, and that part worked out.
