A mechanic over at a shop near the Spring Valley border called me about a 2014 Ford Edge that another locksmith had already attempted and walked away from.

The owner had lost his keys and hired someone to handle the all-keys-lost replacement. That tech started the programming sequence, the car battery sagged during the security handshake, and the body control module went into a fault state. The new fob would not enroll. The old fobs were already wiped. The car was not starting for anyone. The other locksmith told the shop owner to tow it to the dealer and left.

Then I connected my scan tool and cleared the fault codes the BCM had logged during the interrupted sequence. No shortcuts there, you have to let it sit through the reset. Once the module came back clean, I ran a fresh programming sequence for the new smart fob and enrolled it properly.

The key-not-detected warning on the dash cleared. The fob started the car on the first attempt. I walked every button, checked the door handle sensors, and confirmed the emergency insert key worked in the door cylinder.

The whole job ran about an hour and a half, longer than a clean all-keys-lost would take. The owner had already been quoted a flatbed tow plus a multi-day dealer turnaround. He saved a good chunk going this route, and the car left the lot under its own power.

I carry backup power equipment specifically because mid-programming voltage drops are not rare. When someone else's job hits a wall, that preparation is the difference between finishing it and adding to the problem.
