She was parked in a hospital lot in Oceanside, bags of groceries on the back seat, July heat already doing its thing. Ice cream in there somewhere. She pressed the fob and nothing. Pressed again. The Edge just sat there.
She called the dealer first. Tomorrow afternoon was the earliest they could take her.
Then she called me. I was in the Rancho Del Oro area, maybe 20 minutes out.
When I got there she was standing in whatever shade the car made, which wasn't much. I confirmed the fob was the issue, not a dead car battery or a bad door handle sensor. Popped the fob open right there on the hood. The CR2032 was sitting at the low end of voltage, and there was visible corrosion on one of the battery contacts inside the housing. Not catastrophic, but enough to cause the intermittent drop in communication. The fob itself had also lost its pairing.
I cleaned the contacts, fitted a fresh CR2032, and ran the programming sequence through the diagnostic port to re-pair the fob to the vehicle's security system. Tested lock, unlock, and passive entry at the door handles. Everything came back.
Door to done, maybe 40 minutes. Her groceries made it. The dealer comparison came up on her own when she was thanking me. I just told her to keep my number.
