The remote function on some Honda key systems from this era can be paired through an onboard sequence, but the transponder chip inside the remote head key requires professional diagnostic equipment to register to the immobilizer. One without the other and the truck won't start.

2009 Honda Ridgeline Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in the Cedros Design District area when the text came in, which was lucky for him.

A trail runner had gone out for a long morning run from a lot about 20 minutes east of Solana Beach. Somewhere between the trailhead and the turnaround point, his key left his pocket. He came back to a 2009 Ridgeline that wasn't going anywhere. No dealer close enough to matter, no way to tow the truck out of a gravel lot without a good chunk of money and most of the day gone.

He dropped a pin. I drove to it.

When I pulled up, he was sitting on the tailgate in his running kit, phone almost dead, doing the mental math on how bad the day was about to get. I had the right key shell, the right blade blank, and the programmer already loaded for his truck in the van.

I decoded the door lock, cut the blade, built out the remote head key, connected at the OBD port to handle the transponder registration, and then walked through the remote functions to confirm lock, unlock, and the trunk release were all responding. The whole job happened in that gravel lot, truck never moved an inch.

He asked what a dealer would have charged, plus a tow from a location no flatbed was going to enjoy. I told him to call around if he wanted to compare. He didn't bother.
