2014 Honda Ridgeline
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you're not a scam locksmith?

Three things to ask any locksmith before they roll: license number, company name, and a firm price for your specific vehicle. Scam operations quote a low number on the phone and then invent reasons to inflate it once they're standing in your driveway with your door already open. It happens, and Ridgeline owners have run into it just like everyone else.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The remote head key on the 2014 Ridgeline handles both the transponder side, which is what authorizes the engine to start, and the remote functions on the buttons. We program both. Before we leave the lot, we test engine start, remote lock, remote unlock, and each button on the fob. If it doesn't behave exactly like the original, we stay until it does. We don't hand you a key and drive off hoping it holds.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need someone to come out?

You'll need someone with the right equipment. The 2014 Ridgeline remote head key requires programming through the OBD port. There is no ignition-cycle trick or button sequence that will register a new fob on this system. That kind of onboard self-programming belongs to an older era of Honda keys. If you already bought the fob and it matches the factory FCC ID on your original, bring it to us and we can program it.

Q: My Ridgeline starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. If the engine starts without any warning on the dash, the transponder side of your remote head key is still communicating correctly. The remote functions, lock, unlock, and the third button, run on the battery and the RF side of the fob. First move is a fresh CR1616. These batteries test fine on a meter and still fail under the actual load of transmitting a signal, so don't skip the swap just because it seems new.

2014 Honda Ridgeline Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a line cook at 3pm out of a kitchen parking lot in Spring Valley. His shift started at 4, his 2014 Honda Ridgeline wouldn't start, and the stress in his voice said everything. His head chef had already called asking where he was. I told him I was about 20 minutes out and to hang tight.

I pulled into the lot near Dictionary Hill and got his door open without any drama. Then I went straight to work on the key. The remote head key itself was the original factory fob, and after testing I found a combination of a dead battery and a programming sync issue. Fresh CR1616, ran the programming sequence through the OBD port, and it fired right up. I cut him a spare on the spot and walked him through keeping it somewhere he'd actually find it, not loose in a bag.

He clocked in at 4:10. He texted me that night to say thanks. That's the call I want, where the timing matters and I can move fast enough to actually change how the day goes. The dealer conversation never even came up. He knew what that road looked like, and it wasn't the road he needed at 3pm on a Thursday.

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Honda vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which is the state body that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance and hold credentials that allow us to access key code and immobilizer data for Honda and other makes through the appropriate security channels. If you want to verify the license number before we show up, just ask when you call. We have no problem with that.
