My Ridgeline starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. If the engine starts without any warning on the dash, the transponder side of your remote head key is still communicating correctly. The remote functions, lock, unlock, and the third button, run on the battery and the RF side of the fob. First move is a fresh CR1616. These batteries test fine on a meter and still fail under the actual load of transmitting a signal, so don't skip the swap just because it seems new.

If a new battery doesn't bring the buttons back, the fob itself may need to be re-synced to the vehicle. That's a quick OBD job. Only if the fob housing is cracked, the contacts are corroded, or the circuit board took water damage are you actually looking at a replacement. Either way, it's worth a call before you assume the worst.
