I was heading back toward Scripps Ranch after wrapping an earlier job when I got a call from someone parked at a shopping center off Scripps Ranch Boulevard. She had her 2019 Ridgeline but no working key. The fob had gotten wet, she thought, and now the truck would not acknowledge it at all. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time she pressed the start button. She had already tried holding the fob right up to the button, which is the right instinct when the battery is low, but it still did nothing.
I got there inside of twenty minutes. First thing I did was pop the fob and check the battery and the internal contacts. The CR2032 looked okay but the contact pad on one side had a faint green tint to it. Corrosion. I cleaned it, seated a fresh battery, and tried again. Still nothing. The fob itself was done.
So I pulled out the Autel, connected to the OBD port, ran through the security access sequence, and registered a new fob to the truck. Tested all four buttons, tested the start, walked the door handles. Everything came back clean.
She mentioned she had called the dealer first. They told her to have it towed in and said she was looking at a couple of days minimum before they could get to it. She did not love that answer, which is why she found me. I do not think she expected me to be done in the parking lot before she finished her iced coffee.
