I got a call from a guy stranded on the shoulder just outside Downtown National City. He'd been driving his 1996 Hyundai Accent when the key snapped off in the ignition. Half the blade was stuck inside the cylinder, and he was standing there holding the other half wondering how bad this was going to get.
He'd already called another locksmith before me. That locksmith heard "broken key in ignition" and immediately went to a full ignition replacement over the phone. New cylinder, new keys, the whole swap. The quote was high enough that it made him pause.

When I got there I assessed it before touching anything. The break was clean and the fragment hadn't turned far enough to cause any wafer damage. I used a proper extraction tool to work the broken piece out without disturbing the cylinder internals. Came out clean.
From there I decoded the lock by reading the wafer positions directly. Cut a new blade to match on site. Tested it in the ignition, tested it in the door. Worked exactly as the original did.
No drilling. No cylinder swap. No tow to a shop. He drove away from that shoulder on his own, which was the only outcome that actually mattered.
The other locksmith's quote would have meant waiting for parts and losing the car for a day, minimum. The job I did left his original lock completely intact.
