1998 Hyundai Accent
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 1998 Hyundai Accent use?

A standard metal key cut to the vehicle. No remote, no fob, no battery. It operates the door locks and the ignition cylinder mechanically. Replacement means cutting a key blade that matches your specific lock configuration, either by duplicating a working key or by decoding the lock directly. That's the whole job.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made for a 1998 Accent?

On site, the job is quick. Once I decode the door lock or work from your existing key, cutting takes just a few minutes. The whole visit is typically under half an hour, often less. Compare that to scheduling a dealer appointment, dropping the car off, waiting for a service writer, and finding out they sent the work elsewhere anyway.

Q: I lost both of my keys to my 1998 Accent. Can a key still be made without any keys to copy?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 1998 Accent is not a problem. Because this is a mechanical key, the locksmith decodes the lock cylinder directly using a picking and decoding tool, reads each wafer position, and cuts a new key to that specification. No original key needed, no towing to a dealer. I do this at the car, wherever it sits in Lakeside. The new key goes into the lock, confirms fit, and you're done.

Q: My 1998 Accent key turns but feels stiff or won't come out of the ignition smoothly. Is that a key problem or something else?

Usually the ignition cylinder itself on cars this age. Worn wafers inside the cylinder can start binding, especially if the same key has been used for years and has its own wear. A copy cut from a worn key can make it worse. If a freshly cut key from a decoded lock still feels rough, the cylinder is likely the issue, not the key. Worth knowing before you assume a new key will fix the feel.

1998 Hyundai Accent Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Blossom Valley, a guy called me about a spare key for his 1998 Hyundai Accent. He'd stopped by the Hyundai dealer first, and they quoted him a number that made him think keys had gotten complicated. He figured there must be programming involved, some security handshake, something technical that justified the price. He drove home and looked it up before spending that kind of money.

I pulled up to his building and he met me in the parking lot, a little skeptical. When I told him this key is purely mechanical, he gave me the look people give when they think the locksmith is about to pull something over on them.

I decoded the door lock, cut the key blade on site, and handed it to him. He tried it in the door, tried it in the ignition, and just kind of laughed. That was it. No scan tool, no module, no waiting on parts. The whole visit was under twenty minutes.

He said the dealer made it sound like a whole production. It wasn't. Some keys are just keys.

Hyundai Accent Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Hyundai dealer to get a replacement key for a 1998 Accent?▼

No. A mobile locksmith can handle this without a dealer visit. The 1998 Accent uses a mechanical key, so there is no programming, no diagnostic connection, and no reason to schedule a dealer appointment. I come to wherever the car is parked in Lakeside, decode the lock or use your existing key to cut a copy, and hand it to you. The dealer route adds overhead, wait times, and a price that doesn't reflect what the job actually involves.
