I got a call from a guy in Carmel Mountain Ranch who lived in a gated apartment complex off Carmel Mountain Road. His 2013 Accent was parked in his assigned spot inside the gates, and the fob had gone completely dead. Not just the remote functions. The car wouldn't start.
He had already called a tow company. They told him they couldn't get a flatbed through the security gate without a resident code or management approval, and management was closed for the day. So the car was just sitting there.
I drove in behind a resident pulling out and parked next to his Accent. Popped the trunk of my van, which has a key cutting machine bolted to the floor, a stock of flip remote shells, and a full programming kit. Right there in the parking lot.
The fob was the factory 4-button flip remote. I built a replacement using a new shell, transferred the blade, installed a fresh CR2032, and used my programming equipment to pair it to the car through the OBD port. Tested every button, tested the start, walked the locks.
He watched the whole thing from about four feet away. When it fired up, he just kind of stood there for a second.
No tow truck. No gate code drama. No leaving a Hyundai sitting overnight in a parking lot with no working key. The dealer was always going to be an option. It just wasn't the right one for that afternoon.
