A resident at a gated community in Rancho Santa Fe, over in The Bridges, called me on a Saturday afternoon. The situation had a layer to it: he was parked inside the gates, the tow company he had already called couldn't get clearance to bring a flatbed in, and property management wasn't picking up. The fob was a 4-button smart key with a dead battery that turned out to be the least of it. The fob itself had taken some damage, a cracked housing and a contact issue inside that a fresh CR2032 alone wouldn't fix. I built a replacement fob on site, connected through the OBD port, retrieved the immobilizer PIN, and registered the new key. The whole thing happened in his assigned parking spot while his Accent sat exactly where he'd left it.
He asked at some point what the dealer would've done. I told him they'd have started with availability, then scheduling, then probably a week minimum. He had a working key in his hand the same afternoon he called. That part didn't need much elaboration.
