1997 Hyundai Accent
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Does all-keys-lost cost more on a 1997 Accent than just getting a spare?

On this car, not by much. Because the '97 Accent uses a straight mechanical key with no electronic component, all-keys-lost is just a lockout plus a key cutting job. There is no immobilizer to reset, no programming session, no PIN code to pull. The locksmith decodes the lock and cuts you a key. Compare that to newer Hyundai models where losing every key means a full immobilizer reset and a longer job.

Q: Do aftermarket keys work on a 1997 Hyundai Accent?

For this vehicle, aftermarket is basically all there is at this point, and that's fine. The '97 Accent key is a metal blade. Any blank cut to the correct profile for this vehicle will work. There's no chip to mismatch, no fob circuitry to get wrong. The only thing that matters is that the blank is the right profile for the keyway and that the cut matches your lock.

Q: My 1997 Accent key turns but the ignition feels stiff or won't turn at all. Is the key worn out?

Could be the key, could be the cylinder, could be both. On a car this age, the ignition cylinder pins wear alongside the key, so a fresh-cut key from a worn original can sometimes feel worse, not better, because the new key is slightly sharper than what the cylinder has worn itself to. If the cylinder has reached the end of its life, a replacement cylinder is the fix, not just a new key.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made without having the original?

Yes. Two ways to do it. If the original key code is stamped on a tag that came with the car, or is recorded in your paperwork, that code is enough to cut a key without touching the vehicle. If the code is gone, a locksmith decodes the cut directly from the door lock or ignition cylinder. On a '97 Accent this is a routine process. No computer access, no dealer involvement, no towing required.

1997 Hyundai Accent Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy in Downtown Lemon Grove who had locked himself out of his '97 Accent. Not a dramatic story. He'd been driving on one key for years, the bow finally broke off at the ignition, and the stub was sitting in the cylinder. No spare anywhere.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and that the wait would be a few days before they could even look at it.

I got there with my service van and pulled the broken stub out of the ignition first. That part always makes people nervous to watch, but it's a clean process when you have the right extractors. Then I decoded the cut from the door lock, which gave me exactly what I needed to cut a replacement key on the spot. Two keys, actually, because he'd learned his lesson about running on a single copy.

He held the new key, tried it in the door, tried it in the ignition, and just said "that's it?" That's it. No tow, no appointment, no waiting on parts. Done in his parking spot in about 25 minutes. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted him, and that was before factoring in the tow bill he avoided.

Hyundai Accent Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 1997 Hyundai Accent?▼

Call a mobile locksmith. The '97 Accent uses a mechanical key, which is about as simple as automotive keys get. A locksmith can cut a replacement from the door lock or ignition cylinder, or from a key code if you have it, right where the car is sitting. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting on a parts order. The dealer route adds overhead for something that does not need it.
