She was parked near Torrey Pines, coming out of a clinic, and the Q70 just sat there. The start button lit up but the car would not turn over. She had her fob in her hand the whole time.
She had done some homework before calling. She mentioned my California locksmith license number, asked if I carried insurance, and wanted to know whether I had the equipment to work on Infiniti specifically. Not suspicious, just careful. She had heard stories about people losing programming data on luxury vehicles after the wrong shop touched them. Fair concern.
When I got there, I asked her to show me exactly what the dash was doing. The system was throwing a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting right on the center console. That told me something before I even opened anything. I checked the fob battery first, CR2032, and it was reading low. But even with a fresh cell it did not fully resolve, which meant we were looking at a key that had dropped out of registration, not just a dead battery.
I connected my programmer to the OBD port, pulled up the Q70's security module, and ran through the Intelligent Key enrollment process. The factory PIN sequence is what ties a new or re-registered fob to this car, and without it you are just clicking a fob that the car will never accept. Her original key came back in clean, and I cut and enrolled a second one so she would have a spare.
She had already called the dealer before reaching me. They told her the earliest appointment was four days out. I was done in under an hour, in the parking lot, and she drove away with two working keys.
