My key shell is cracking. Can you swap it without reprogramming?

Yes, and this comes up more than you'd think on these Infiniti fobs. The shell on the Q70's smart key is known to crack around the key ring attachment point and along the seam near the emergency blade slot. It's a stress concentration area that gets worse with key ring weight over time.

What we do is transfer your original circuit board into a new replacement shell and cut a fresh emergency blade to match your vehicle. As long as the electronics move over intact, there's nothing to reprogram. The immobilizer sees the same board it always has. Shell swaps are one of the cleaner fixes we do on site.

What exactly is a smart key and why does my Q70 need it programmed?

Your 2015 Q70 uses Infiniti's Intelligent Key system. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's immobilizer and body control module to authorize the engine to start. It's not just a remote. The transponder inside the fob has to be registered to your specific car.

A blank fob cut to the right profile won't start the vehicle. The immobilizer will reject it. Programming is what ties the key to your car's security system, and that requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. The fob also has four buttons for remote functions, but the start authorization is what makes it a smart key rather than just a clicker.

My Q70 is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start with the CR2032 battery in the fob. That's the most common cause, and it's a two-minute fix.

If a fresh battery doesn't change anything, try holding the fob flush against the push-to-start button while pressing it with your foot on the brake. The button area has a backup antenna that can read the fob's transponder at close range even with a weak or dead battery. Some Q70 owners have used this to get home when the battery died unexpectedly.

If neither of those works, the fob may have lost its pairing. This can happen after the 12-volt vehicle battery goes completely dead and gets jumped or replaced. The immobilizer doesn't always hold its key memory cleanly through a hard power loss. At that point the fob needs to be reprogrammed, which is something we handle on site in Bostonia or anywhere in El Cajon.

I need an all-keys-lost situation handled. I have no working fob at all. Is that something you can do on site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2015 Q70 is a job we do regularly. It requires diagnostic equipment to put the immobilizer into a learn state, register at least one new fob, and erase any previously paired keys so they can't be used to start the car.

The process takes longer than a simple add-a-key because the immobilizer needs to go through a full reset sequence, and that sequence has a built-in timed cycle. Budget around 45 to 60 minutes on site. We also cut the emergency blade so the mechanical backup works. By the end, you leave with a fully functional key and the old lost fobs are locked out.

Can I buy a fob online and just have it programmed?

Sometimes, with a caveat. A fob sourced online needs to be the correct one for a 2015 Q70, and that means matching the factory FCC ID on the fob exactly. There are aftermarket fobs and also genuine used fobs floating around, and not all of them are what the listing claims.

If you bring one and it's the right unit, we can attempt to program it. If it's wrong, counterfeit, or internally damaged, programming won't take and you've wasted the purchase. Buying through us removes that risk because we verify the part before the job starts. Either way, programming always requires our equipment. There's no self-programming sequence for the Q70's Intelligent Key system.
