2000 Nissan Frontier
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 Nissan Frontier actually use?

A standard metal key. No remote, no buttons, no fob, no battery. You insert it into the ignition cylinder and turn it, same as trucks from that era were built to work. Replacement is a cutting job: we either decode your existing lock or locate your key code and cut a new blade to match. That's the whole process.

Q: How long does the dealer process take for a key replacement on one of these trucks?

Longer than it should. Dealers typically schedule key work as a service appointment, which means you're calling ahead, arranging a time slot, and towing the truck in if you have no working key. Once it's there, you may wait for a tech to get to it even if the actual work takes a fraction of that time. For a 25-year-old truck with a mechanical key, that's a lot of overhead for a job that doesn't require their shop at all.

Q: I have a worn key that still works but feels loose in the ignition. Should I get a copy made now or wait until it fails?

Get a copy made now. The 2000 Frontier ignition cylinder and the key blade both wear over time, and a key that's gone sloppy is already telling you something. If you wait until it won't turn or snaps off in the cylinder, the job gets harder and more involved.

Q: Can I get a spare key made if I only have one and it's still working?

Yes, and that's the easiest version of this job. Bring the working key, or we come to you. Having a spare for a 25-year-old truck parked near the Border Area is genuinely smart - replacement parts for locks and ignition cylinders on these are not hard to find, but being stranded without any key is an avoidable problem. Takes about 20 minutes when you already have a working key in hand.

2000 Nissan Frontier Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the port of entry in the Border Area of San Ysidro. He'd been at the crossing most of the morning and set his keys down somewhere between the car and the checkpoint. By the time he realized they were gone, they were gone for good.

He had a 2000 Nissan Frontier. Single key, no spare, no backup. He called the dealer first. They told him to tow it in, wait for an opening, and be ready for a wait. He wasn't interested in any of that. He found me.

I drove out to him. The truck was sitting right there in the lot, baking in the afternoon sun. I decoded the door lock directly, cut a replacement key to match, and had him turning the ignition inside of 30 minutes. No tow, no appointment, no leaving the truck behind.

He just wanted to get home. The dealer comparison didn't even come up until he was already starting the engine.

Nissan Frontier Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Nissan dealer to get a replacement key for my 2000 Frontier?▼

No. This is a fully mechanical key job, and a qualified mobile locksmith can handle it right where the truck is sitting. There's no dealer-only equipment involved here. We decode the lock or work from the key code, cut the replacement blade, and you're done. No tow required, no appointment window, no sitting in a waiting room. One visit, on site, wherever the truck is in San Ysidro.
