Fire Mountain sits on a ridge above the 76 corridor in Oceanside. The streets up there run steep and narrow, and some of the cul-de-sacs are one-car-wide with no good place to turn around. I already knew that before I got the call.
A guy working from home had his 2008 Frontier parked in front of his house on one of those tight uphill streets. His remote head key had taken a hit, probably dropped on concrete. The blade still went in the ignition but the remote housing had cracked near the battery door, and somewhere in that crack the transponder connection had gone unreliable. The truck would crank and stall. He tried a few times, thought the truck was sick, then started down the tow truck route. The first driver looked at the street and declined. The dealer told him to get the truck to them first, which wasn't much help when the truck wouldn't start.
I parked at the bottom of the hill and walked up with my bag.
Once I saw the housing crack, the diagnosis made sense. The internal connection to the transponder was intermittent. I built him a fresh remote head key, programmed the transponder to his immobilizer, verified the remote functions, and cut the blade to match. The whole thing happened on the sidewalk next to his truck.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and ask. He already knew it was going to be more, and that was before accounting for the tow he would have had to figure out.
