There is a smog check shop over in Loma Alta that I have gotten calls from before. They see a lot of older trucks and work vehicles, so when something weird happens in their lot, they know to call someone who shows up with more than one plan.
This one started with a 2020 Frontier that already had a bad day before I got there. The owner had lost his only key and called a different locksmith first. Once I had clean, stable voltage, I connected through the OBD port and cleared the fault that the previous attempt had left behind. The module needed a clean slate before it would accept a new key enrollment. That is not unusual after a failed all-keys-lost attempt. After the fault cleared, I ran the full programming sequence, the new fob enrolled on the first pass, and the truck started without hesitation.
Total time was closer to an hour and a half than a typical job. The interrupted attempt added steps that a clean first-run job would not have. I walked the smog shop guys through what had happened so they could explain it to the next customer who shows up in a similar situation.
The owner got a working key, the truck left under its own power, and the dealer never came into the conversation.
