Aftermarket remote head key shells for this truck vary in quality. The shell and blade can be cut to your vehicle no problem, but the transponder chip inside the key head has to be compatible with the immobilizer in your specific truck. Some aftermarket blanks carry the right chip. Others carry a chip that looks correct on the listing but will not enroll. I have seen people spend money on a blank that ends up being unusable.

If you already have a blank in hand, tell me the part number printed on it when you call. I can usually tell you before I even show up whether it is worth trying. If it works, great, you saved on the blank. If it does not, I carry compatible stock so we are not stuck.

My 2010 Frontier starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On this remote head key, the transponder that starts the truck and the remote that locks and unlocks the doors are in the same shell but handle separate jobs. If the truck starts, the chip is fine.

First thing to check is the CR1620 battery. This size drains without much warning and weak is not the same as dead on these, which means the remote can get flaky before it quits entirely. Swap the battery with a fresh CR1620, not a CR1616 or CR2016, and retest from a normal distance.

If a fresh battery does not bring it back, the contact board inside the shell sometimes corrodes or cracks at a solder point, especially in a key that gets a lot of daily use. That is a repair job, not a full key replacement. If the shell itself is cracked or the blade is worn thin, then replacement makes more sense. I can tell you which direction you are headed once I have a look at it.
