2017 Nissan Frontier
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the key replacement actually take once you are at my truck?

For the 2017 Frontier mechanical key, faster than most people expect. Decoding the cut from the lock or pulling the code from records, then cutting the blade on the mobile unit, typically runs fifteen to twenty minutes at the vehicle. If there is a broken key fragment to extract first, add a few minutes for that. No programming countdown, no immobilizer reset, no waiting on a scan tool to cycle through.

Q: Can you get to me faster than the dealer can?

Yes, by a significant margin. A dealer appointment for a key on a 2017 Frontier can run days out, depending on tech availability and parts on hand. On a mechanical key job there is nothing to order, nothing to program, and no certified-tech requirement. I come to you in Lakeside with the cutting equipment already loaded. No repair order queue, no waiting room, no parts counter. The actual cutting work is the same wherever it happens.

Q: My key is worn down and sometimes does not turn smoothly. Do I need a new lock cylinder or just a new key?

Usually just a new key, and here is why: a worn key and a worn cylinder wear together over time. The key gets rounded off, the cylinder pins follow. When you cut a fresh key to the original code, it matches what the cylinder was designed for, not the worn-down profile your old key carved out over years of use.

Q: Can I get a key made from the VIN if I have zero keys left?

Yes. The key code for your Frontier can be retrieved through locksmith key code databases using the VIN. That code tells me the exact cut pattern for your locks and ignition. No original key required. This is standard practice for mechanical key vehicles, and the 2017 Frontier base trim is a clean example of exactly that kind of job. Bring your proof of ownership and I can pull the code and cut a working key on site in Lakeside Proper.

2017 Nissan Frontier Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Lakeside Proper, near the car wash off Lemon Crest, a mobile dog groomer waved me down after she had already called the Nissan dealer that morning.

She had a 2017 Frontier, base trim, keyed ignition. Her only key snapped off in the door lock while she was unloading crates. Half the blade was still in the cylinder, and she was convinced the whole lock was ruined and the truck was done for the day. The dealer quoted her an appointment slot three days out, which was not going to work for someone with a full grooming schedule.

I pulled the broken blade fragment with a broken key extractor, checked the lock cylinder for damage, and found it turned fine once the piece was out. Then I decoded the cut from the lock itself and cut a new key blade on site. She was back in her truck in under thirty minutes.

That is the part people do not expect: the lock did not need to be replaced. The key was the only casualty. She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer was going to charge just to get started, and her afternoon bookings were still on.

Nissan Frontier Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my Frontier after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments in this area tend to close mid-afternoon on Saturdays and stay closed Sundays. If you snap a key or lose it on a weekend, that is a long wait to get moving again. Because the 2017 Frontier base trim is a mechanical key job with no programming involved, there is no reason to wait for a dealer. A mobile locksmith can cut a replacement from a key code or by decoding your lock, any day, including evenings.
