The CR2032 should run two to four years depending on how often you use passive entry, which pings the fob more frequently than button presses do.

The most common post-programming complaint on Frontier Intelligent Key setups is intermittent key-not-detected warnings where the truck still locks and unlocks fine but throws a warning at startup. That pattern usually points to a battery contact issue or, less often, a weak signal from the antenna ring around the push-button start. It is rarely the programming itself. Either way, it falls under our warranty and we diagnose it on site.

One thing to avoid: if the truck is showing any security-related warning and you try multiple key cycles in quick succession, some Nissan systems will temporarily lock out the immobilizer as a theft deterrent. If that happens, let it sit for a few minutes before trying again.

I bought a fob online. Can you just program it to my 2023 Frontier?

Sometimes, but it depends on what you bought. The 2023 Frontier does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver seat. Adding a key requires a professional diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. If the fob you purchased is the correct configuration and matches the vehicle's requirements, we can attempt to register it. If it does not pair correctly, that is usually a blank compatibility issue, not a programmer issue. Bring it and we will check it, but know going in that a fob sourced from a random online listing is a gamble.

My Frontier starts fine but the door handles stopped doing the passive entry thing. Is the key dying?

Probably not the key. If the truck starts and the buttons on the fob still work, the fob itself is communicating fine. Passive entry on the door handles operates on a closer-range signal than the start function, so a fob with a low battery or a slightly bent contact tab can lose handle response while still starting the truck. Swap the CR2032 first and lift the positive contact tab if it looks flat. If that does not fix it and the issue stays isolated to one door handle, you are looking at the handle sensor or the wiring on that door, not the fob.
