Near the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach, a woman called me from her apartment parking lot. She had one key to her 2004 Toyota Highlander. That was it. She had been meaning to get a spare cut since she bought the car used, and she never got around to it. Then the key housing cracked from years of keychain stress, and the blade snapped off in the door lock. Half the blade was stuck inside the cylinder. The other half, still attached to the fob housing, was in her hand. She had no way in and no way to start it.

I pulled the blade fragment out of the lock first, then decoded the cylinder to get the cut information. The chip inside her cracked housing was still intact and readable, which mattered a lot. Instead of treating it like an all-keys-lost job and wiping the immobilizer clean, I was able to read the transponder data directly from the salvaged chip. That told me everything I needed without a full reset.

I cut two new key blades to match, transferred her original chip into a fresh housing for a rebuilt primary key, and programmed a second key as a spare. Both verified at the ignition. Both started the car clean.

The whole thing took under 45 minutes. She stood there watching the whole time, which I actually prefer. Less explaining to do at the end.

She asked on the way out what the dealer would have wanted for this. I told her to call them and find out, but that she had saved a good chunk either way.
