I got a call from a woman in Spring Valley, over in the Bancroft area. She had a 2011 Toyota Highlander and the key situation had been unraveling for about two weeks. It started with the door handle touch unlock acting up on the driver side. Then the fob range got short enough that she had to stand right next to the car to get any response. I straightened the clip, seated the battery correctly, and then did the part that actually matters: walking through every function one at a time. Driver touch unlock, passenger touch unlock, lock button, hatch release, start. All of it. When the dash stopped showing any warning and the handles both worked clean, she let out this long breath like she had been holding it for two weeks. Which, honestly, she kind of had.
No new fob. No dealer trip. No tow. She asked what the dealer would have charged to sort it out. I told her to think of whatever number was in her head and cut it down significantly. That seemed about right.
