Out in Alpine, Viejas Area side, I got a call about a 2007 Highlander with a fob that had seen better days. The owner already knew the remote still worked, mostly. But the plastic shell had split along the seam, the rubber button pad was worn down to almost nothing, and the battery door tab had snapped off, so she was holding the back panel on with a rubber band.
She had called the dealer first. They told her a full replacement fob, programmed and ready, was the path forward. The number they quoted made her pause.
When I got there, I popped the fob open on the hood of her Highlander and checked what actually mattered. The circuit board was clean. No corrosion on the battery contacts, no cracked solder points, no signs of water intrusion. The transponder chip and the remote board were both intact. The only thing wrong was the housing itself.
I transferred the electronics into a replacement shell, reseated the CR1632 correctly, and snapped it together. Then I did the part that tells you whether you actually fixed it: walked every button, checked the door response, verified the start function, and tested the emergency insert blade in the door cylinder. Everything worked the way it was supposed to.
She did not need a new fob. She did not need a programming session. She needed a shell swap and someone who bothered to look at what was actually broken before quoting a full replacement. The dealer price was in the rearview mirror at that point, and she saved a good chunk by not replacing parts that were never the problem.
