2006 Toyota Highlander Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Toyota's immobilizer is the reason your key costs more than a hardware store copy. Every Toyota since the early 2000s has a transponder chip in the key head. The chip evolved from 4C to 4D to G-chip to H-chip over the years, but the concept is the same. When you turn the ignition, a coil around the cylinder sends a signal to that chip. The chip responds with a code. If the code matches, the engine starts. No match, no start. That is why a $3 key copy from the kiosk will turn the lock but will not start the car.
A woman at Costco in Vista thought only the dealer could program that chip for her 2006 Toyota Highlander. The dealer quoted $281 and she assumed that was her only option because of the "computer work" involved.
