I got a call from a woman staying at a rental in Bressi Ranch, one of those newer planned neighborhoods off El Camino Real in Carlsbad. She was visiting for the week and her 2008 Highlander Limited was sitting dead in the driveway. The push-button start wouldn't respond. She had already tried holding the fob directly against the start button, which is the backup method when the battery is completely gone, and that wasn't working either. She called the dealer. They told her to tow it in and they could see her the next afternoon.

I was there that evening.

She handed me the fob before I even looked at the car. Popped it open on the hood. The CR1632 inside was so depleted my meter barely registered it. But when I seated a fresh cell and tested range, the touch sensors on both front door handles still weren't responding. That told me the fob alone wasn't the full story.

I connected to the OBD port and pulled the vehicle's registered key data. The fob she had was the original, still enrolled, still valid in the system. The touch sensors were reading intermittently on one handle and not at all on the other. That's a known weak point on these, the handle sensor harness on the driver's side especially. I cleaned the contact area, reseated the connection under the handle trim, and retested.

Both handles came back.

She watched the whole thing from the front step of the rental. When I walked the car, ran all four fob buttons, tested touch lock and unlock on both handles, and confirmed push-button start responding normally from two different distances, she looked genuinely surprised it was that contained a fix.

She did not need a new smart key. She did not need a tow. She saved a good chunk compared to the dealer estimate, and she got her car back the same night instead of losing a full day of her trip.
