A resident over at Coronado Shores called me on a Tuesday afternoon. She had two fobs for her 2016 Highlander, and one had just stopped working. The other was getting flaky. She had already priced it at the dealer, which wanted to order the fob from parts, schedule a separate programming appointment, and charge individually for each piece of the job. The total was enough to make her pause, and that was before she factored in getting the vehicle there on a workday.
She works close enough to the water that parking is its own event. Towing was not something she wanted to deal with.
I pulled up during her lunch window and set up in the parking structure near her building. The fob that had "stopped working" had a CR1632 sitting crooked in the tray, barely making contact. Straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and that one came back immediately. No programming needed.
The second fob was a different story. The fob itself was worn through enough that the internal board had a stress point near one of the button contacts. That one needed a replacement fob shell and a full re-registration through the OBD port. I cut a new emergency insert blade on my machine to match her vehicle, registered the new fob to the immobilizer, and walked every function: door handles, the liftgate button, lock, unlock, all of it.
She was back inside before her lunch break ended. The dealer comparison came up for about ten seconds when she saw what the total was. She said something like "that's it?" and went back to work.
