2017 Toyota Highlander
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 2017 Highlander?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN, and I confirm the right fob and blade for your vehicle and give you a price. Then I come to you. On site, I cut the emergency insert blade to your vehicle, prep the fob with a fresh CR1632, and connect to the OBD port with my programming equipment to enroll the new key into the immobilizer.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Three things: the vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, typically your registration or title. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to verify specs before I cut anything. That is it. I keep it simple because the alternative is not. Some dealers have turned Highlander owners away at the parts counter for not having the right documentation lined up in advance, even when the owner had registration and VIN in hand.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my 2017 Highlander?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and it depends on what you bought. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID for your specific Highlander. Aftermarket fobs vary in quality, and some do not pair reliably even when the part looks identical on the outside. If you bring me an aftermarket unit and it fails to enroll, I cannot guarantee the result, and I do not warranty third-party parts. The safer move is letting me source the fob.

Q: My 2017 Highlander fob still works but the door handle touch sensor is unreliable. Is that a key problem?

Probably not the fob. If the start system still recognizes the key and the buttons function normally, the fob is doing its job. The touch-sensitive area on the door handle has its own sensor, and dirt, moisture, or a wiring issue at that specific door can cause exactly what you are describing without anything being wrong with the fob itself. Try cleaning around the handle area and check whether the problem is isolated to one door or all of them.

2017 Toyota Highlander Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman parked at the lot near Del Mar Village on a Tuesday afternoon. She had one key left for her 2017 Highlander. The other had gone through the wash inside her son's shorts pocket about two weeks earlier. She had been putting off dealing with it.

Then her remaining fob started acting up. The door handle was not responding reliably, and she had to stand right against the car to get it to wake up. She was not locked out yet, but she knew she was getting close.

She had called the dealer first. They told her they could order the part and get her in later in the week, and she should plan to leave the car for the day while they handled programming. The quote they gave her made her pause long enough to search for another option.

I met her in that lot with everything I needed. Pulled the fob apart first. The battery was the original, which, on a 2017 sitting at this point in the car's life, was overdue. I swapped in a fresh CR1632, confirmed the contacts were seated right, and then moved on to the actual job: cutting her a second fob and enrolling both into the vehicle through the OBD port using my programming equipment.

The whole thing ran about 35 minutes. Both fobs were tested on every function before I handed them back. She drove out of that lot with two working keys and spent a fraction of what the dealer had quoted.

She mentioned on the way out that she had not realized a mobile locksmith could handle the programming side. A lot of Highlander owners in Del Mar still think that part has to happen at the dealer. It does not.

Toyota Highlander Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2017 Toyota Highlander somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to wherever the vehicle is. Driveway, parking lot, office, Del Mar Village, wherever works for you. I bring the fob, the cutting equipment, and the programming tools. Everything happens on site. The dealer route typically means driving in with a working key or arranging a tow, then leaving the car while they wait for parts or a technician window to open up. That can mean a same-day turnaround or it can mean overnight.
