The fob was dead. He was standing in the cell phone lot at the airport, rolling luggage beside him, and his 2023 Highlander just sat there. Then I connected to the OBD port anyway, just to check whether anything had logged during the communication dropout from the dead battery. Nothing that needed clearing. The system was clean.
He got into his own car, put his bag in the back seat this time, and drove home. The dealer comparison did not even come up. He just kept saying he could not believe that was all it was.
I left him with a spare CR2032 and told him to put it somewhere other than the trunk.
