He had been gone a week. Business trip, carry-on only, emergency key blade tucked inside a small pouch in his checked bag that he had thrown in the trunk before the ride to the airport. The kind of thing that makes total sense until it does not.
The fob was dead. He was standing in the cell phone lot at the airport, rolling luggage beside him, and his 2023 Highlander just sat there. No response to the unlock button, no response to the door handle touch sensor, nothing. He tried holding the fob closer to the handle. He tried it from different angles. Still nothing.
He called the dealer first. Thursday was the earliest they could see him. It was Tuesday afternoon.
He found me on his phone while standing next to the car. I told him I could be there in about 40 minutes. He sounded like he had already been standing there long enough.
When I arrived, I could see him sorting through his options in his head, still not fully accepting that the answer was just a dead CR2032. I popped the fob, swapped the battery, and the handles woke right up. Doors unlocked. Dash came to life normally, no warnings. We confirmed all four buttons were responding and that the touch sensor on both front handles was working.
Then I connected to the OBD port anyway, just to check whether anything had logged during the communication dropout from the dead battery. Nothing that needed clearing. The system was clean.
He got into his own car, put his bag in the back seat this time, and drove home. The dealer comparison did not even come up. He just kept saying he could not believe that was all it was.
I left him with a spare CR2032 and told him to put it somewhere other than the trunk.
