A woman was staying at an Airbnb over in Bonita and called me on a Sunday evening. She'd flown in for a long weekend, rented a car, and somewhere between the airport and the house the fob had stopped responding reliably.
By Sunday it was completely unresponsive. The car just sat there, wouldn't acknowledge the fob, wouldn't unlock from the handle touch. She'd already tried the trick she found online, holding the fob to the start button area to use it as a backup reader. That worked once, she got it started, drove to get groceries, came back, and then it stopped working entirely.
She called the dealer. They told her to have it towed in and they'd look at it the next afternoon. She had a flight out Monday morning. The tow plus the wait made no sense for her timeline.
I pulled up to the Airbnb that evening. She handed me the fob and before I even pulled a tool out I opened it up and looked at the battery. The CR1632 inside was the original, no doubt about it. The contact clip had a slight outward bow from years of the battery pressing on it, which means even a fresh cell won't sit with full contact. Bent the clip back, dropped in a new CR1632, snapped it shut.
Tested the doors. Touch unlock on the driver handle was back. Start button saw the fob from normal distance. Ran through all four buttons. Everything worked.
She didn't need a new fob, didn't need programming, didn't need a tow. She needed someone to actually open the thing and look. She made her flight.
