Near Ferry Landing in Coronado, a guy flagged me down after I pulled into the lot where he was waiting by his 2022 Highlander. He had already been to the Toyota dealer website, confirmed an appointment was available the following week, and mentally prepared to leave the car for most of a day. Then a neighbor told him to call me first.
The fob had stopped triggering the door handles reliably. Sometimes it worked from two feet away. Sometimes it didn't work at all until he was standing against the door. The push-button start still recognized the fob once he was inside, which told me the key itself was still enrolled to the vehicle and the immobilizer wasn't the problem yet. That's a detail worth paying attention to -- it narrows the diagnosis before I even open anything.
I checked the CR2032 first. The cell read low on the tester, sitting right at the edge of what the system tolerates. The battery contact inside the fob also had a slight bow to it, probably from being opened and closed a few times with a flathead instead of the correct pry point. I straightened the contact, seated a new CR2032, and snapped the fob back together.
We walked the car. Both front door handles responded on touch. Hatch button worked. Lock and unlock from the driver's side. Start button recognized the fob from the seat. Everything that had been inconsistent was now consistent.
He didn't need a new fob, didn't need a dealer appointment, and didn't lose a workday. The dealer would have been next week anyway. I was already there.
