Downtown La Mesa, mid-afternoon. A guy flagged me down practically - he had already called two other places and neither one could tell him over the phone what they would actually do to his 2001 RAV4 or what it would cost. That alone told me something.
His situation was simple on paper: he needed a replacement transponder key because his original was cracked through the head, the chip inside was almost certainly damaged, and the car was stalling out seconds after starting. Classic failed transponder behavior on these older Toyotas. The remote fob was fine, still locking and unlocking the doors without any issue. He just needed the ignition side sorted.
I decoded the lock mechanically, cut a new key blade to match, and enrolled the transponder chip to the immobilizer right there in the parking lot. The whole job took less than forty minutes including the decode.
He asked what the dealer had quoted a friend of his for something similar. I told him I had no idea what they quoted, but I knew what I charged. He said he saved a good chunk and would not have to wait three days for a shop appointment.
The part that stuck with me was how rattled he was before I showed up. A stalling car in a parking lot feels like a big problem. On a 2001 RAV4, once you know what you are looking at, it is one of the cleaner jobs I run.
