2016 Toyota RAV4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2016 Toyota RAV4 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out at The Bridges in Rancho Santa Fe, a homeowner flagged me down in her driveway after I finished a job nearby. She had already been to the dealer two weeks earlier about her 2016 RAV4.

They told her what she wanted was a second smart key as a spare, and they quoted her a wait time and a price that made her pause. She took down the number, went home, and eventually found me.

When I arrived she handed me the original fob to inspect first. The emergency insert blade was slightly bent from pulling it out of the cylinder the wrong way, but the fob itself tested fine at the handles and start button. Good. That meant I was adding a spare, not diagnosing a failing unit.

I pulled the diagnostic port connection, ran the key registration sequence for the RAV4 smart key system, and enrolled the new fob. Then I cut the insert blade to her vehicle. The whole thing was done on the driveway. No tow. No appointment. No leaving the car somewhere overnight.

She tested both fobs at the driver and passenger handles, tried the hatch button, and confirmed the start button saw each one. Then she looked at what she paid versus what the dealer quoted and just nodded. That was the whole moment. No drama, just a second working key and a car that recognized both of them.
