A guy in the Border Area of San Ysidro called me on a Saturday morning. He had driven his 2019 RAV4 to the campground near the edge of town the night before and somehow ended up with zero working keys by morning. Not lost, not stolen, just a fob that had been sitting in a cup holder next to his phone and a portable charger for three days straight. He figured the CR2032 was drained from interference, swapped the battery himself at the camp host's table, and the fob still did nothing. No door response, no start.
When I got there, I went through the basics first. Held the dead fob directly against the start button, the way Toyota hides a passive backup reading point in the button housing itself. Nothing. The car's immobilizer wasn't seeing any valid key at all.
That told me this wasn't a battery issue. At some point between the old fob and the swap, something had gone sideways in the key registration. Could have been a corrupted pairing, could have been the fob itself. Either way, I was looking at an all-keys-lost job on a push-to-start vehicle with no physical ignition cylinder to fall back on.
All-keys-lost on this generation is tool-dependent work. I connected through the OBD port, cleared the existing key memory from the immobilizer, and registered a new fob. The whole sequence has a timed component built in, so you wait it out. There's no rushing it.
Car started. He stood there watching it like he expected it to change its mind.
The dealer would have required a tow, an appointment, and a wait, and he was parked twenty minutes from the nearest Toyota service bay. I was already packed up and on my way back before noon. The dealer comparison was an afterthought for him. Getting out of that parking lot on his own was the whole point.
