With the smart key, the vehicle's antennas are reading the fob continuously when it is nearby, which is what allows the push-button start to work. If the chip inside the fob is not registered to your vehicle's security system, the car will not start regardless of whether the fob battery is good. Programming is the step that ties the two together, and it requires diagnostic equipment on this generation, not a DIY sequence.

My RAV4 is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Start with the CR1632 in the fob. Swap it with a fresh one, and when you seat it, make sure it is lying flat against both contacts. A slightly tilted cell throws the same warning as a dead one.

If the new battery does not clear it, try the backup method: hold the fob body directly against the start button and press the brake. Toyota builds a short-range inductive path into the start button for exactly this situation. It bypasses the main antenna circuit and can get you started when the battery is low or a contact is marginal.

If neither of those works, the problem is somewhere deeper: the fob itself, the vehicle's antenna loop, or the security system. That is a diagnosis job, not a battery swap, and it is when you call us to sort out which piece is actually failing before spending money on parts.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. The 2012 RAV4 smart key has no owner-accessible programming sequence. There is no series of door opens, ignition cycles, or button presses that registers a new fob. That self-programming method exists on some older Toyota models with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder, but the smart key system on this vehicle requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to write the new fob into the security system.

The fob you bought online is probably fine as a blank. Bring it to us and we can program it on site. You likely saved something on the part cost by sourcing it yourself, and we handle the programming side.

Can you add a second smart key if I still have my original working key?

Yes, and it is the easier version of the job. When you still have a working key in hand, adding a spare does not require a full security reset. We connect through the diagnostic port, register the new fob alongside the existing one, and both keys work going forward. Faster than an all-keys-lost situation, which involves a timed reset sequence before any new key can be registered.
