Over on the Beyer Blvd Corridor in San Ysidro, I got a call around 2am from a guy whose only RAV4 fob had gone completely dark. Car was sitting in the driveway. He had already tried the mechanical key insert to get in, which worked fine, but the push-button start would not recognize the fob at all. No response from the dash, no ready light, nothing.
He figured a tow was the only path forward. He was already on his phone pulling up tow company numbers and trying to find dealer hours for the morning.
I told him to stay put.
When I got there, the first thing I did was rule out the obvious. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, reseated the battery contact, tested range from the driver door. Still nothing. The fob was gone, not just weak.
I pulled out the diagnostic equipment, connected to the OBD port, and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for this platform. The process reads the immobilizer data, calculates the security handshake, and walks through registering a new fob from scratch. The old dead fob gets wiped from the system in the same sequence so it cannot be used even if someone finds it later.
New fob programmed, mechanical insert key cut to the vehicle, all four buttons tested, touch sensors on both front door handles verified, and the start button confirmed. Total time on site was under an hour.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have charged, and that is before you factor in the tow bill he was about to call for.
There are a small number of very new Toyota configurations where the security system ties back to the manufacturer's online infrastructure and my tools cannot complete an all-keys-lost remotely. If your vehicle is one of those, I will tell you before you commit to anything. But for the overwhelming majority of RAV4 owners in San Ysidro, this is a job I do on-site, in the driveway, same night.
