I got a call out of Downtown Ramona on a Tuesday afternoon. Owner had a 2014 RAV4 XLE and a problem she couldn't pin down. The push-to-start would work in the morning, no issues, then randomly refuse to wake up by evening. Sometimes a key-not-detected warning, sometimes just nothing. It's the security system doing exactly what it's supposed to do, just slowly.

I programmed a new fob with the correct chip generation matched to her vehicle, seated a fresh CR1632 with the contacts clean and properly clipped, and walked every function: door handles, start button, hatch release, lock, unlock. Ran it through several cycles until I was satisfied it wasn't going to hiccup.

She asked me what the other locksmith had done wrong. Honest answer: probably used a compatible-but-not-correct aftermarket key. They're out there, and they'll pass initial registration. They just don't always hold.

The dealer comparison barely came up. She was more relieved than anything else.
