2018 Toyota RAV4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2018 Toyota RAV4 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy near CSUSM Area in San Marcos around 2am on a weeknight. His only fob had stopped working and his 2018 RAV4 was sitting in the driveway going nowhere. Push-button start, no spare, and the car was not recognizing anything. He had already been on his phone looking up tow companies and dealer wait times for the morning.

I told him to stay put.

When I got there he met me at the curb, still holding the dead fob like it was going to change its mind. The battery was the first thing I checked. It was not just weak, it was corroded on one terminal, which is its own small problem. Swapped it out, cleaned the contacts, and tested. Nothing. The fob was not waking the car at all, which at that point pointed past the battery.

I connected to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for this system. The process has a timed sequence built in that you just have to sit through. There is no skipping it. While the tool was working, he asked me if he needed to call Toyota in the morning anyway to activate something on their end. Short answer was no, not on a 2018. That online server dependency showed up on some later production years, but his was well within the range I handle independently on-site.

New fob registered, emergency insert key cut and tested, doors and start button all confirmed working. He was back inside before 3am.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him something steep the last time he needed any Toyota key work done. This time he paid a fraction of that, without a tow, without waiting for a service bay to open, and without leaving his car somewhere overnight.
