My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. The 2015 RAV4 uses a Smart Key, so the fob itself doesn't go into the ignition during normal use, but the emergency insert blade inside the fob does fit a physical lock cylinder, and that blade can break if it's used forcefully or if the housing was already cracked.

If the blade snapped inside a lock, I use extraction tools to pull it without damaging the cylinder. Once it's out, I can cut a replacement blade from your vehicle's lock data and, if needed, program a new fob on site. The whole thing happens in your parking spot. No tow, no waiting at a service counter.

What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2015 RAV4 uses a Smart Key fob, which handles three things at once: passive entry through the door handles, remote lock and unlock through the buttons, and engine authorization through the immobilizer.

Inside the fob there's also a physical emergency blade you can pop out and use on the door cylinder if the battery dies completely. The electronic side communicates with the vehicle's security system to authorize the start. Without that signal, the engine won't run even if you somehow turned the cylinder.

If the fob shell cracks but the internal components survive, I can often transfer everything into a new housing and save you the cost of a full replacement. If both are damaged, I cut and program a completely new fob on site.

My RAV4 says the key isn't detected. Where do I start?

First move is always the CR1632 battery. A low battery on this fob can trigger a key-not-detected warning and kill the passive entry on the door handles well before the fob stops working entirely at close range.

If the battery is fresh and you're still getting the warning, try this: pull the emergency blade out of the fob, hold the fob body directly against the start button, press the brake, and push the button. There's a backup inductive reader built into the start button area on these, and it can authorize the start even when the wireless signal is too weak to reach the antenna.

If neither of those works, the problem could be the fob itself, one of the vehicle's interior antennas, or the immobilizer system. That's a diagnosis call, not a battery swap, and it's when you want a tech on site with the right equipment.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2015 RAV4. Can I program it myself?

No. Not on this system.

The 2015 RAV4 Smart Key requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to register a new fob to the immobilizer. There is no button sequence, no ignition-cycling trick, no DIY relearn for a Smart Key on this vehicle. That type of onboard add-a-key procedure exists on older Toyota models with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. This is a different setup entirely.

If you already bought the fob, it's not wasted. Bring it to me and I can pair it to your RAV4 on site. Just know that the part is only half the job.

Question 5

I have one working key for my RAV4. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Get the spare now. Here's why it matters on this specific vehicle: if you ever reach zero working fobs, the job becomes an all-keys-lost procedure. That takes longer, involves additional steps to wipe the immobilizer and re-register everything from scratch, and costs more than simply adding a second key while one is already working and present.

Adding a spare while you have a functioning key is the faster, simpler, less expensive version of the same job. One working key today is closer to zero than most people think.
