I was parked near the fountain area at RB Town Center in Rancho Bernardo on a Tuesday afternoon, waiting on a call, when a woman walked up and asked if I did Toyotas. Her 2015 RAV4 was a few rows over.

The fob had stopped locking the doors consistently, and the touch unlock on the driver handle was hit or miss. She'd already replaced the battery herself, which is the right first move.

I popped the fob open on my workbench in the van. The CR1632 she'd put in was the correct type, but one of the battery contacts had a slight outward bow, probably from a previous battery that sat loose. The contact wasn't making a solid connection. I reshaped it, cleaned both contact points, reseated the battery, and snapped it back together.

Then I did the part she wasn't expecting. I walked the whole car. Driver handle touch unlock, passenger handle, both handle lock buttons, all four fob buttons, and three consecutive starts. I also checked range from about thirty feet because intermittent fob issues sometimes come back at distance even after a contact fix.

Everything held. She stood there watching me walk around her car pressing things, and I think she expected me to be done in two minutes and hand it back. The walk-around is the job. That's what tells you whether the fix actually took.

She didn't need a new fob at all. Just the right small repair, done in the RB Town Center parking lot, for a fraction of what a dealer visit would have cost her.
